19 Guinea Pigs Surrendered to ACS Brisbane Shelter

Severe case of neglect - RSPCA Case

On the 25th March 2008 ACS received a call from RSPCA. The RSPCA had just had 17 very unwell guinea pigs surrendered into the shelter. Due to a large number of other animals needing special care at the RSPCA shelter, ACS was contacted and asked to take the guinea pigs onboard. The original owner of the guinea pigs is currently being located and due to longterm neglect of the guinea pigs the RSCPA hopes to take the case to court. The guinea pigs medical conditions range from mild to severe some of the guinea pigs will be at ACS Brisbane Shelter for months for treatment of severe fungal conditions/dermatitis. ACS Brisbane shelter also received two more guinea pigs with the 17 others one of which is suffering from bite wounds and an injury to the eye which was the result of three males being housed together with two females which in turn resulted in the males fighting with each other.

Most of the guinea pigs from the 17 are suffering from mild to severe contagious fungal infections. One sow in particular has such a severe infection half her body is ' caked ' with so much flakiness that it has set hard. She will be seeking vet attention to confirm the best treatment approach and medication. Some of the guinea pigs have eye damage from mild to severe and one guinea pig has cataracts to both eyes. Some of the guinea pigs have mange mite infestation. Most of the guinea pigs have wounds to their body ranging from mild to moderate. Below are photos of the guinea pigs. Photos are copyright and were taken at the RSPCA. Update photos will appear soon.
