Guinea Pig Breeds and Colours
There are many different
guinea pig breeds and colours and their are guinea pigs that can be a
cross between a couple of different breeds and colours these piggies can
be very funky looking some can look very unique due to them not conforming
to the characteristics of a particular breed. ACS does not promote
breeding and the information provided on this website is simply so that
guinea pig owners have a good source of information to find out the
correct colour and breed of their guinea pig as many guinea pig owners can
be given misleading or incorrect information. It's nice to be able to know

Colours
Standard colours generally range from dark
to light
shades of each colour. Below is a basic guide to guinea pig colours. Guinea pigs can come
in White, Black, Lilac, Saffron, Slate, Chocolate, Golden, Red, Cream,
Buff and Beige. Guinea pigs can have either black or pink eyes in most colours.
- Chocolate and Slate coloured guinea pigs can only have BLACK eyes. Beige
and Lilac guinea pigs only have RED eyes. Knowing this simple guideline
can help a great many people as these four colours can range in shade and
can sometimes be very difficult to determine the difference between them.
- Saffron's only have RED eyes and Buffs only have BLACK eyes the shade
difference between these two colours can be very close and knowing that
each have a different eye colour can help you to decipher the exact colour
of your guinea pig.
To help you make a definitive decision about the colour of your guinea pig
you can generally tell the colour by looking at the guinea pigs SKIN
PIGMENTATION on the ears and foot pads the skin pigment generally matches
that of the coat colour. More information on the skin pigment for
particular breeds can be found below.
