Gingermegs and I go Christmas Lighting! - Sent in by Jessica

Well it's tradition every year that my family and I go and visit Brisbane's Winning Christmas Lights on Christmas Eve. I used to take my very special Ruby a gold and white sheltie sow...for seven years we went to the lights together and last year was really sad without Ruby by my side. Ruby passed away at eight years of age from old age she was my best friend. This year a very special new soul mate Gingermegs who coincidently is also a gold and white sheltie and a rescued piggy, visited her very first Christmas lights with me. Guinea pigs that enjoy the company of people usually will enjoy this sort of low key outing I know Gingermegs had an absolute blast. Mind you on a side note if your guinea pig started fretting from being out or stresses easily around people I'd recommend not taking them on these sort of outings. Gingermegs herself is an extremely docile and laid back guinea pig she is used to being around people both at the shelter and at ACS awareness displays.

First Gingermegs came to my mums church Christmas carols with me I felt guilty as she was talk of the hall and seemed to be the centre of attention. Later on we went Christmas lighting and yet again Gingermegs was receiving so much attention from the public and she was lapping it up like you wouldn't believe!!! She was munching away on corn and endive and had a blast...not a care in the world! We departed at 7pm to see the lights and got home at 11.30pm so Gingermegs had quite a busy night. I popped her in her cage when we got home and she straight away just began munching on food as usual so their was definitely no stress on her shoulders that's for sure. Photo at right....spot Gingermegs!

Many people bring their dogs for a walk through Christmas light set-ups so why not bring a piggy if they are social and laid back enough to enjoy the outing? It sure was a fun night out for myself and Gingermegs this year and a tradition not to be missed! Christmas is a time for the whole family and it would never be the same to visit Christmas lights without a piggy by my side. For anyone wishing to go christmas lighting with their guinea pig I'd recommend the following - 1. have a towel handy 2. pack food for your guinea pig 3. bring a camera! 4. bring a carry cage for your guinea pig. If your guinea pig is clearly not enjoying the occasion you may have to leave him/her in the car. 5. Make sure you think of your guinea pig and how they will handle being out of their usual environment. If they stress easily they may not be suitable to bring with you. 6. bring the whole family and get into the spirit of it all!
