Tobi's Story

On October the 11th 2005 a very underweight and very scared sow was dumped with rubbish ( and obviously like rubbish ) in the bush and was found by the police who took her to the RSPCA. Guinea pigs in this condition would generally be euthanized but luckily with the ACS being a contact for the RSPCA, Tobi was given a second chance at life at our ACS Brisbane shelter. Tobi was very skittish and squealed when you tried to touch her. She had literally no hair on most of his body and the parts with hair was so thin that you could feel her bare skin underneath. The rspca dosed Tobi with revolution before she came to the sanctuary and she was then treated with Ivomec and Fido's Pyrethrin Concentrate at the sanctuary. Tobi was given a big comfy cage with lots of hay and food and a little house.

By late November Tobi's coat had grown back although was still very thin and course so a leave in moisturizing treatment was applied.

In December 2005 due to Tobi's low immune system she suffered severe heatstroke. Tobi was found lying on her side with labored breathing and unable to move. Immediate heatstrokee treatment and dehydration/electrolyte fluids were administered. (The heatstroke treatment applied was the same as in the article which can be found on the website). Tobi was kept inside for several days as she had labored breathing, a rapid pulse and wasn't responding to treatment as well as hoped. Tobi survived though due to immediate treatment and catching her early although we still see this case a true miracle we didn't think that Tobi would survive considering her condition.

Tobi now resides permanently at the sanctuary.
